Konark Sun Temple
Konark Sun Temple one of the most beautiful world inheritance site of Odisha (Orissa). This temple was created in 13th-century, at the mouth of the river Chandrabhaga. According to the mythological history the temple was built by king Narasimhadeva. The temple is in the shape of a huge chariot elaborately carved stone wheels, pillars and walls. The name Konark derives from the combination of the Sanskrit words, Kona (corner) and Arka (sun), in reference to the temple which was dedicated to the Sun god Surya. This temple was also called the Black Pagoda of Odisha (Orissa) by European sailors.
The temple has built twelve pairs of wheels which are 3 meters wide and is pulled by seven horses. This temple follows the traditional style of Odisha (Orissa) architecture. It is attentively built towards the east so that the first rays of sunrise strikes the principal entrance of the temple. According to history, king Narasimhadeva appointed a chief architect called Bisu Maharana to build the konark sun temple. After twelve years, a workforce of twelve thousand almost finished the construction. But, they failed to go up the crown stone of the temple. So, the king ordered the temple to be finished in three days or the artisans is put to death. At the time, Bisu Maharana’s twelve-year-old son, Dharmapada nike name is Dharama, arrived at the site to meat hi father. Bisu Maharana had never seen his son, as he had left his village when his wife was still pregnant. Dharmapada successfully finished the crown stone of the temple. But, the 1200 artisans were still worried that the king will be anger to know that a boy succeeded where his best artisans failed. When Dharmapada known about this he climbed onto the temple and leapt into the water of river Chandrabhaga to save his father and his 1200 co-workers.
This temple is a legend and counted in between wonders. The 1200 best skilled workers woks for 12 years to produce this temple, best quality stone arts can be observed on every part of the temple, as today most of the parts of the temple are not present, but still this temple is very popular and thousands of tourists come to visit Konark Sun Temple every year.
